Biography.Jim Gornall hails from the village of Longridge in Lancashire, England. Even though there was no music in the family home growing up, he always felt a strong desire to play. Having experimented with various kinds of music in his earlier years, it was not until he first experienced Irish traditional Music in 1975 that he finally discovered what he had been searching for. After hearing John Doonan play in a concert in Liverpool in 1976 he knew that the piccolo was the instrument he wanted to play. Little did he realise what a life changing decision this was going to be. He moved to Ireland with his wife and young family in 1985 after spending the intervening years playing in various sessions and folk groups in Liverpool. He now lives just outside Listowel in County Kerry. He has two sons, James and Jonathan, and a daughter, Róisín. They are all into music but none of them "wisely", as Jim himself puts it, plays the piccolo.
